Maryam Ghaffarzadeh
Graduate Student (PhD)
Maryam joined the MATTER team in September 2025 as a PhD candidate working on a Mitacs-funded collaboration with Canfor Pulp Ltd. Her research focuses on developing sustainable and value-added solutions for British Columbia’s pulp and paper sector by investigating alternative fibre sources, recycling strategies, and innovative product development pathways. Through this work, she aims to support the long-term resilience and sustainability of the pulp industry while addressing emerging challenges related to raw material availability, circular economy practices, and product diversification.
Building on her strong background in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (M.Sc., UNBC), Maryam is also exploring the potential development of MOF/pulp-based materials for medical and health-related applications. Her interdisciplinary research connects biomass valorization, advanced materials, and sustainable product innovation, contributing to MATTER’s broader vision of developing environmentally responsible technologies with both industrial and societal impact.
