Dr. Hossein Kazemian (PI)
Associate Professor, Environmental Sciences Program, GEES Department, Faculty of Environment

Born and educated in Iran, where I earned degrees in General, Analytical, and Environmental Chemistry from Isfahan University, I ventured further in my academic journey to Western University in Canada for a postdoctoral fellowship in Material and Environmental Chemistry. Since joining the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), I have been deeply embedded in the fabric of northern BC, contributing both as an educator and a researcher.

As the head of the Northern Analytical Laboratory Services, I have embraced my role not just in academia but as part of the broader community, residing and working on the unceded territories of the Lheidli T’enneh. My professional and personal journeys as a scientist, mentor, and collaborator are deeply influenced by my commitment to understanding and improving our environmental and climate challenges through innovative solutions.

My research specializes in the synthesis, characterization, and application of porous materials for environmental remediation, engaging in the intricate dance of science that intersects with industry and societal needs. From creating novel materials for air, water, and soil cleanup to teaching courses in Chemistry and Environmental Science, my work is aimed at preparing the next generation of scientists while fostering sustainable technologies.

In classrooms and laboratories at UNBC, I teach and mentor with a philosophy that knowledge should be actionable and directly beneficial to communities. I am privileged to guide both Masters and Ph.D. students in Environmental Science and Chemistry, sharing insights not just on scientific inquiry but on the responsibilities of scientists to their communities.

My career is also marked by my contributions to global scientific and industrial communities as a consultant and collaborator, helping to bridge gaps between research, practice, and policy. This role amplifies my dedication to making a tangible impact through science, shaping policies, and developing products that address real-world environmental issues.

I welcome engagement with students, colleagues, and industrial partners who are passionate about leveraging science for community well-being and environmental stewardship. Together, we strive to advance scientific understanding and create solutions that foster a healthier, more equitable world.
